Council Member Keith Powers Announces $250k for the High School of Art and Design
Posted by | Categories: AD NewsNEW YORK – Today Council Member Keith Powers announced that he has secured $250,000 in capital funding for the High School of Art and Design. This investment will go toward state of the art technology for use in the classroom, as well as upgrades to the school’s athletic and fitness facilities.
These funds will be used to purchase brand new iPad Pro carts for the school’s digital illustration classes. The availability of these industry standard digital design tools will ensure that the High School of Art and Design remains a leader in arts education. The school’s gymnasium will receive a brand new scoreboard, and the fitness center will receive a set of stationary bikes.
“I am extremely proud that we are able to help the High School of Art and Design incorporate brand new technology into their classroom, and add new exercise equipment to their fitness center, which the school’s entire community will benefit from,” said Council Member Keith Powers. “And as a lover of sports, I know that the new scoreboard will help us all to cheer on the student athletes when they become champions!”

Alumni Art Show Thursday Aug 3rd 6pm to 8pm
The High School of Art and Design is pleased to bring together a collection of works spanning nearly five decades of lineage. Everyone in this exhibition is connected to the school’s rich 80+ year history of art making, rigor and experience.
The pieces in this show come from a diverse group of artists, who clearly have remained dedicated having left the temporary guidance offered at the school. Life post-high school can take many forms for a budding artist just leaving the nest, entering the world to become whatever life has in store. Others choose a more academic path, beginning fresh new careers in veterinary science, biomedicine, education or finance. Our graduates hold enormous potential, regardless of interest, talent or ambitions. They are not only great artists, but great thinkers.
Alumni are connected in very specific ways, just by virtue of coming from the same family. What may not be obvious is that some of the artists continue into their professional careers with the media they come to love in school. They dabble in watercolor and go on to become master watercolorists. They learn the basics of cartooning and go on to light up comics in a big way. This is particularly heartening to see that an impact so profound continues well into many years of professional art making.
The High School of Art and Design would like to thank the Alumni Association and President George Alonso for their continued support of our school’s mission and for embracing the rich history created here every day.

In memory of Michael Cheverino
Posted by | Categories: In Memoriam
On behalf of the Art & Design Alumni Association, we are sorry to inform you of the passing of one of our alumni. Michael Cheverino, beloved HS of Art & Design teacher and former President of the A&D Alumni Association, and alumnus of the Class of 1971.
Not only was Michael Cheverino a dedicated and caring teacher, he was also very involved with Art & Design’s Alumni Association. He was the organization’s Vice President from early 1992 through October 2008, when he became its President. He graciously offered his classroom for our meetings until we were able to secure a room of our own. Michael also encouraged his students to participate in our alumni events — often as hosts. It was a great way to inspire them to follow in our footsteps. I’ve known Michael, and worked with him, for a more than two decades. He was truly one of a kind and will be dearly missed.

All alumni whose paid memberships are current are invited to attend and cast their vote.
Draw-a-thon 2.0-- The Wrap-Up
